Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands, lying about 140 miles off the east of mainland Spain. It has many family friendly resorts and almost as many beaches as Majorca and Ibiza combined. Peaceful holiday resorts line the south coast and a string of quiet fishing villages are along the island s rougher northern shore. If you have the time to explore the interior you will discover a wealth of interesting and historic landmarks from El Torro the highest point on the Island to the most significant prehistoric sites at Trepucó and Torre d’en Galmés.
Over the years, Menorca has undergone very minimal changes and has certainly been sheltered from the effects of over development. Menorca has a typically Mediterranean climate and is warm most of the year round. With average annual temperatures of 15 to 17 degrees and a summer high of in the region of between 23 and 26 degrees, the rainfall is mainly in the autumn months. The capitol Mahon, with its large natural harbour, is in the east, 2 miles from the airport.
Food and Drink.
In Menorca you will find a variety of restaurants to suit all tastes, including British, German and Italian fare. There is however a wonderful variety of Balearic dishes to sample in local restaurants. Seafood dishes are very popular with red mullet, lobster and squid being high on the menu. However the island is famed for caldereta de llagosta, a lobster stew once prepared simply by local fishermen on their boats. 'Tapas' are traditional bite sized snacks made with meat, olives, fried fish or vegetables and are usually served with drinks.
Not to be missed is the local speciality drink, Gin Xoriguer, which is distilled at Mahon harbour. Here you can get a 'Menorcan Breakfast' (neat gin), and try all the locally-produced liquors, of which there are about 12.Try Cava (a sparkling wine), Sangria (a drink made of wine, brandy, lemonade and fruit) ,or Jerez (Spanish sherry)
